a masonic study circle with a
difference
This unique masonic study circle is an autonomous body formed in 1993 by a number of freemasons in Melbourne, Australia, and has the sanction of the United Grand Lodge of Victoria. The reason for establishing this study circle was to learn about - and experience - the Royal Art (Craft) as it is worked on the continent of Europe in general and under the Grand East of the Netherlands in particular.
The aims of KRING NIEUW HOLLAND (Circle New Holland) are:
to foster and develop the spirit of freemasonry according to Netherlandic customs and usages;
to appreciate and experience freemasonry as worked by lodges under the Grand East of the Netherlands; and
to foster good fellowship and fraternity among its members and their families.
To accomplish these aims, the study circle usually meets in the form of a demonstrated Dutch lodge or in the style of an authentic Dutch masonic "comparitie" where its activities include:
The practice of the traditional customs and usages of a comparitie;
The study of the history, development and consequent orientation of Netherlandic freemasonry;
The study and demonstration of Netherlandic rituals and ceremonies, and their relationship to rituals of other Constitutions.
The practice of traditional customs and usages of a Table Lodge.
Kring Nieuw Holland also demonstrates Dutch masonic rituals and ceremonies in the lodge room of the Collingwood Masonic centre with the brethren meeting in the form of a demonstrated Dutch lodge.
A comparitie is an informal meeting held in the forecourt (voorhof), usually an ordinary meeting room with the tables arranged in the form of a 'hollow square'. It requires no special facilities other than being able to be tyled and having simple catering facilities (i.e., an Ante Room or a small "South".
